ACEC New York was formed in New York City in 1921, when a dozen principals of consulting electrical engineering firms loosely united to fight for the issues important to them. Today, ACEC New York, a statewide organization -- one of the oldest continuing organizations of consulting engineers in the U.S. -- is still fighting to further the profession, taking on issues as they develop and evolve, and enhancing the business environment and professional lives of its members.

Representing 270 firms (237 engineering firms and 43 affiliate firms) that collectively employ more than 17,000 people in New York State and over 100,000 worldwide, ACEC New York actively promotes the interests of engineering companies to legislators, clients, colleagues and communities. Political and legislative influence
ACEC New York promotes the interests of engineering companies with an active and influential political and legislative effort, which includes maintaining contacts with all of New York's state agencies that utilize professional design consultants and partnering with related industry organizations such as the American Institute of Architects New York State (AIA/NYS), General Building Contractors of New York State (GBC/NYS), Association of General Contractors (AGC), New York Building Congress (NYBC), New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE), New York Business Council, New York Road Improvement Coalition (NYRIC), American Public Works Association (APWA), Subcontractors Trade Association Inc.
Networking
The Council provides numerous opportunities to talk with legislators, heads of agencies, private clients and fellow professionals in a variety of settings.
Topical information
Members are kept current with engineering business trends and developments as well as human resource issues through regularly published materials. These include a monthly electronic newsletter; a membership directory, mailed to members and heads of city and state agencies; and other pertinent materials such as the Annual Salary Survey.
Continuing education
Training seminars and education programs satisfy continuing education credits required by many state licensing boards.
Public relations
A well-organized media program communicates to the public at large and the engineering community the achievements and importance of private-sector engineers.
Scholarships
A highly successful scholarship program awards promising undergraduate engineering students, to encourage young people to become consulting engineers.
Awards
Two annual awards programs -- the Engineering Excellence Awards to honor professional achievement and the Annual Awards Program to honor leadership -- give recognition to our members for outstanding work.
  ACEC New York comprises eight regions, which work together on issues and programs important to members across the state. Each region also maintains a distinctive regional focus on issues of particular interest to its local membership. The regions include:

ACEC New York is a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), which is based in Washington, D.C. Representing 51 state and regional engineering associations, ACEC promotes the interests of consulting engineers on the national level, and offers other benefits such as preferred life and health insurance rates and a 401(k) retirement program.
