What is a Consulting Engineer?

Consulting engineers are licensed professionals in the private sector who provide design services and expertise to both public and private entities. They are integral in shaping our communities and our world—designing our highways, bridges, tunnels and transit systems; modern buildings, schools and hospitals; energy-efficient mechanical, electrical and fire safety systems; and water and wastewater treatment plants.

In addition to preliminary and final design services, consulting engineers can provide feasibility studies, environmental impact studies, supervision and inspection of construction work, and technical advice and assistance.

Consulting engineers make engineering their business. The competitive environment in which they operate requires innovative thinking, flexibility and efficiency. Through fulfillment of mandatory continuing education requirements, New York’s consulting engineers remain current with the latest trends and technologies.

As the voice of the consulting engineering industry, ACEC New York continually promotes the profession to a variety of audiences, including the architecture/engineering and construction community at large, the media, potential public and private sector clients, aspiring engineers, and the general public.
